what did you think of almost life? whistler was so sweet, everyone has been telling me i need to hurry up and read the dutch house next

emma's avatar

yes the dutch house goes so well with whistler and tom lake! commonwealth is quite good too.

i liked bits of almost life but it ended up feeling a bit unbalanced to me — i thought we saw way more of erica’s flaws and laure’s strengths while being told they evened out! i did read it very quickly though

You never disappoint! I think you finally convinced me to put Hill on my TBR (just need to choose what to start with). Anyway you are my go-to for lit fic recs and my favorite literary Substacker🫶🏻

i was torn between the nix and wellness, and i went with the nix because it’s his debut so i might as well read them in order. i recently bought wellness too. and thank you so much, that’s my fave thing to hear!! i hope you find some new fave books 🫶🏼🫶🏼

Almost life is my favorite book so far this year. I was so devastated.

so good! i was very surprised when i discovered the author usually writes fantasy and almost life was her first contemporary / lit fic book

Seriously! So incredible. I’ve already got her other books from the library!

I need to read Almost Life too. From the blurb, it sounds like my kind of story and I'm focusing on reading more queer books centered around lesbians this year since I used to read a lot of books with gay/bi characters

Do you think you preferred Whistler to Tom Lake? I am desperate to read it!

leah beth's avatar

i personally liked tom lake more!

I finally read Yellowface and it’s as razor sharp as everyone says. I’m also very into Amal El-Mohtar after Seasons of Glass and Iron so I read The River Has Roots which is short but still gives you a great story with beautiful turns of phrase.

i still haven’t read yellowface! i’ve heard mixed things but it does sound really interesting
